If you have a positive pregnancy test at Compass Women’s Clinic, your next step is to have an ultrasound exam. We offer pregnancy confirmation through no-cost, limited obstetrical ultrasounds performed by a licensed healthcare professional.
What Is An Ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses the echoes from high-frequency sound waves to produce a picture of the inside of your uterus. Our licensed healthcare provider first applies a gel-like substance to your abdomen.
The echoes of the sound waves form an image on a monitor. Obstetrical ultrasounds are performed abdominally or vaginally. Our licensed healthcare providers will walk you through each step.
Why Do I Need An Ultrasound?
A positive pregnancy test isn’t enough information to make a fully-informed decision about your pregnancy. There’s so much more to know. A limited obstetrical ultrasound can determine:
- The location of your pregnancy. Some pregnancies develop outside the uterus. This type of pregnancy is called ectopic or tubal and is potentially life-threatening.
- How far along you are in your pregnancy (the gestational age). If you are considering abortion, the gestational age determines your options for the abortion procedure.
- The viability of your pregnancy. A viable pregnancy is developing. The Mayo Clinic states that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. You can get a positive pregnancy test even though you have already miscarried.
Before An Abortion
Abortion is a life-altering decision. It can lead to physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual effects in some women. Make sure you understand the procedures, side effects, and potential risks.
Be prepared ahead of time. An ultrasound before abortion indicates the abortion procedure you will most likely receive. If the pregnancy isn’t viable and you have had a miscarriage, there is no need to schedule the procedure.
An ectopic or tubal pregnancy cannot be corrected by abortion. You will need to see another healthcare provider.
