In the meantime, continue reading to learn about the various abortion procedures available.

Medical Abortion

A medical abortion is a method that uses two powerful drugs to end a pregnancy. First, mifepristone is taken to block the hormone progesterone. After that, misoprostol causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy and related tissue from the vagina.

Also known as the “abortion pill,” medical abortions are FDA-approved through ten weeks gestation. It causes abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, with an array of other side effects.

Potential risks of medical abortion include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion uses a combination of drugs, sharp medical instruments, and suction to terminate an existing pregnancy. It’s usually performed at a hospital or clinic when a medical abortion is no longer an option. You will likely be observed for a couple of hours afterward for complications and heavy bleeding.

Surgical abortion carries different risks, such as:

  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall
  • Infection

In severe cases, this can lead to unusual, absent, or painful menstrual cycles, future miscarriages, and infertility.
